Where to drink Champagne in Nijmegen?
Nijmegen calls itself the oldest city in the Netherlands, founded by the Romans on a hill above the river Waal. Today it’s a green, laid-back university city with a food scene that punches well above its size. Champagne fits in easily here, from serious wine bars to one of the country’s most talked-about restaurants.
The places on our map are spread around the centre and the leafy streets to the east. Around Kelfkensbos, near the Valkhof park, you’ll find bistros with wine lists built on organic and grower producers, and on the Berg en Dalseweg there’s a wine bar with a serious Champagne list. Nijmegen also has a two-Michelin-star restaurant that puts plants at the centre of the menu and draws diners from far beyond the city.
The wine doesn’t stop at the city limits. The hills around Groesbeek, just south-east of Nijmegen, are home to a cluster of Dutch vineyards that are easy to reach by bike.
Explore the Champagne Hunters map before you go, and if you find a place serving real Champagne that isn’t listed yet, add it to the map.
Good to know
Every July, Nijmegen hosts the Four Days Marches, the Vierdaagse, when tens of thousands of walkers cover long distances on four days in a row and the city throws a week-long festival around them. Hotels fill months in advance and restaurants are packed that week. If you’d prefer a quieter visit, check the dates and plan around them.
