Where to drink Champagne in Nijmegen?

Nijmegen calls itself the oldest city in the Netherlands, founded by the Romans on a hill above the river Waal. Today it’s a green, laid-back university city with a food scene that punches well above its size. Champagne fits in easily here, from serious wine bars to one of the country’s most talked-about restaurants.

The places on our map are spread around the centre and the leafy streets to the east. Around Kelfkensbos, near the Valkhof park, you’ll find bistros with wine lists built on organic and grower producers, and on the Berg en Dalseweg there’s a wine bar with a serious Champagne list. Nijmegen also has a two-Michelin-star restaurant that puts plants at the centre of the menu and draws diners from far beyond the city.

The wine doesn’t stop at the city limits. The hills around Groesbeek, just south-east of Nijmegen, are home to a cluster of Dutch vineyards that are easy to reach by bike.

Good to know

Every July, Nijmegen hosts the Four Days Marches, the Vierdaagse, when tens of thousands of walkers cover long distances on four days in a row and the city throws a week-long festival around them. Hotels fill months in advance and restaurants are packed that week. If you’d prefer a quieter visit, check the dates and plan around them.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I drink Champagne in Nijmegen?

Start in the centre around Kelfkensbos and the Valkhof, then head east along the Berg en Dalseweg. Use the Champagne Hunters map to see the listed venues.

Can I order Champagne by the glass in Nijmegen?

Yes. The wine bars and bistros on our map pour Champagne by the glass, alongside longer bottle lists. Check the individual listing before you go, as pours change often.

Why is Nijmegen called the oldest city in the Netherlands?

The Romans built a settlement here around 2,000 years ago, and Nijmegen celebrated its 2,000th anniversary as a city in 2005. You can still find Roman finds in the city’s museums.

What should I eat with Champagne in Nijmegen?

Oysters from Zeeland are a classic Dutch pairing. For something more casual, a plate of bitterballen, the crispy fried meat croquettes served in almost every bar, goes surprisingly well with a glass of Champagne.

What else should I drink in Nijmegen?

Try Dutch wine from the vineyards around Groesbeek, or a beer from one of the local breweries. The Netherlands has a strong beer culture, and Nijmegen’s students keep plenty of bars busy.

What should I see in Nijmegen?

Walk through the Valkhof park with its medieval chapel, stroll along the Waalkade by the river and visit Museum Het Valkhof for Roman history and art. The Grote Markt is the heart of the old town.

What counts as Champagne on Champagne Hunters?

Champagne Hunters only lists venues serving authentic Champagne from the Champagne region of France. Other sparkling wines are not included unless the venue also serves Champagne.
