Champagne Lovers’ Guide to South Korea: restaurants, bars and things to do
South Korea has a sophisticated food, drinking and nightlife culture where Champagne fits naturally into the country’s modern urban lifestyle. Seoul in particular has a strong luxury hospitality scene, with elegant restaurants, hotels, wine bars and lively nightlife districts offering plenty of opportunities to enjoy Champagne. The contrast between French sparkling wine and Korean cuisine is also part of the fun – Champagne can work surprisingly well with spicy, fermented and grilled foods.
Korean cuisine offers a huge range of flavours and textures. Try Korean barbecue, bibimbap, japchae, tteokbokki, mandu, fried chicken and jeon, as well as an assortment of banchan served alongside meals. Seafood is another important part of Korean food culture. Champagne’s acidity and bubbles can refresh the palate with fatty grilled meats and fried foods, while its freshness can balance chilli, garlic, fermented flavours and salty sauces.
Seoul is the obvious starting point, but South Korea offers plenty beyond the capital. Busan combines beaches, seafood markets and a more relaxed coastal atmosphere, while Jeju Island is known for volcanic landscapes, coastal scenery and local food. Historic cities such as Gyeongju offer ancient temples, tombs and palaces, providing a very different experience from the neon-lit streets of Seoul.
In Seoul, explore Insadong for traditional crafts and tea houses, Bukchon Hanok Village for historic Korean houses, and Myeongdong for shopping and street food. Hongdae is known for its youthful energy, cafés, music and nightlife, while Gangnam offers a more polished mix of restaurants, shopping and entertainment. For views across the city, head towards Namsan or the Han River.
South Korea is also a fascinating destination for Champagne lovers because drinking is deeply woven into social life. A meal can move from soju and beer to wine or Champagne depending on the setting, while Korean food provides an almost endless selection of flavours to experiment with.
