Mexico City has one of Latin America’s most exciting food and drink scenes, and Champagne fits naturally into its more sophisticated side. From elegant restaurants and hotel bars to stylish champagne bars and rooftop terraces, there are plenty of places where bubbles can accompany everything from a long dinner to a Champagne celebration.
The city is enormous, but neighbourhoods such as Polanco, Roma Norte, Condesa and Juárez are particularly interesting for food and drinks. Polanco is known for upscale restaurants and luxury hotels, while Roma Norte and Condesa offer a more relaxed mix of contemporary restaurants, wine bars, cafés and cocktail spots. Juárez has a lively, creative atmosphere with plenty of independent places to explore.
Mexico City also has an extraordinary food culture, from traditional Mexican cuisine to some of the country’s most ambitious fine dining. Champagne can be surprisingly versatile here – think seafood, ceviche, tostadas and dishes with fresh citrus and spice when considering what to eat with Champagne.
The city has a fascinating history too. Built by the Spanish in the 16th century on the site of the Aztec capital Tenochtitlan, Mexico City still brings together pre-Hispanic, colonial and modern influences. The historic centre, with the Zócalo, Metropolitan Cathedral and Palacio de Bellas Artes, is a good place to see that history layered together.
Mexico City is best explored by neighbourhood rather than trying to cover everything at once. Spend time in Polanco for fine dining and luxury, Roma Norte and Condesa for restaurants and bars, and the historic centre for architecture, museums and centuries of history. If you want a break from the city, Chapultepec Park is enormous and worth setting aside several hours for.

November to February is one of the best times to visit Mexico City, with dry weather, plenty of sunshine and comfortable daytime temperatures. March to May can also be pleasant, although temperatures rise towards late spring. The rainy season generally begins around May or June and brings more frequent afternoon showers.
