Champagne city guide

Where to drink Champagne in Milan?

Milan is probably one of the easiest Italian cities in which to make Champagne part of your day. The city has a strong aperitivo culture, plenty of wine bars and a restaurant scene where a good bottle can easily turn an ordinary evening into something a little more special.

You can go for a glass during an afternoon around Brera or the Duomo, find somewhere for aperitivo, or settle in for dinner with Champagne on the table. And because Milan is in Lombardy, there’s another reason for wine lovers to pay attention: Franciacorta is just a short trip away.

Champagne or Franciacorta?

Milan is a particularly good place to try both.

Franciacorta comes from Lombardy, so it’s the local sparkling wine you’re most likely to encounter when exploring the region. It is made using the traditional method, with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc among the permitted grapes.

If you normally reach for Champagne, order a Franciacorta alongside it and see what you think. They share a production method, but they don’t taste identical – and the differences are part of the fun.

If you have time to leave Milan, Franciacorta itself makes an excellent day trip. The wine region stretches around Lake Iseo, with wineries and vineyards spread between the lake and the foothills. You can turn the trip into a proper wine day rather than just fitting in one tasting.

Milan is made for aperitivo

You can’t really talk about drinking in Milan without mentioning aperitivo. The idea of having a drink and something small to eat before dinner is deeply woven into the city’s social life.

Champagne fits into this very nicely. You might start with a glass before dinner, have some small bites, wander through the city and then continue somewhere else for dinner. There’s no need to make the whole thing a formal Champagne occasion.

And if you want to stay local, look for Franciacorta during aperitivo too. It’s an easy way to try Lombardy’s own bubbles without leaving Milan.

Good to know

Milan works particularly well if you want Champagne and Italian sparkling wine in the same trip. Spend a few days exploring the city, then take a day to Franciacorta and compare what you drank in Milan with bottles from the region itself.

If you’re visiting in spring or early autumn, a day outside the city can also be a nice break from Milan’s busy streets. And if you find a Champagne spot that isn’t on our map, add it to Champagne Hunters or leave a comment on an existing listing – especially if you know whether they offer Champagne by the glass.

Frequently asked questions

Is Milan good for Champagne?

Absolutely. Milan has a strong wine and restaurant scene, and Champagne fits naturally into its aperitivo culture, restaurants and more celebratory occasions.

Where should I look for Champagne in Milan?

You’ll find Champagne in different parts of the city rather than one specific Champagne district. Brera, the area around the Duomo and other central neighbourhoods are good places to start, but the Champagne Hunters map is a better way to find what’s actually near you.

And if you visit somewhere already on the map, share your experience in the comments – particularly if the Champagne selection or by-the-glass availability has changed.

Can I drink Champagne by the glass in Milan?

Yes, some Milanese venues offer Champagne by the glass, while others focus on bottles. Availability varies by venue, so check the individual listing before you go.

What Italian sparkling wine should I try in Milan?

Franciacorta is the obvious one. It’s produced in Lombardy using the traditional method, making it a particularly interesting comparison with Champagne.

What is Franciacorta?

Franciacorta is a traditional-method sparkling wine from Lombardy, produced mainly from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc. The wine region is centred around Lake Iseo, not far from Milan.

Can I visit Franciacorta from Milan?

Yes. Franciacorta is close enough to make a trip from Milan, especially if you’re interested in visiting wineries and tasting the wines where they’re produced.

What is aperitivo in Milan?

Aperitivo is the Italian tradition of having a drink and something to eat before dinner. In Milan, it’s a particularly important part of the city’s social life, and you’ll find everything from simple snacks with a drink to more substantial aperitivo spreads.

What food goes well with Champagne in Milan?

Milanese cuisine is richer than you might expect, but Champagne’s acidity can be a great counterpoint. Try it with seafood, fried appetisers, creamy dishes, cheeses or lighter starters before moving on to dinner.

Is Milan worth visiting for wine lovers?

Yes, especially if you combine the city with a trip outside it. Milan gives you access to a broad selection of international wines and Champagne, while Franciacorta gives you the chance to explore one of Italy’s most interesting traditional-method sparkling wines right on its doorstep.

And if you discover a Champagne place we haven’t listed yet, add your find to the map or comment on an existing spot. That’s how we keep the guide useful for people coming to Milan after you.
