Where to drink Champagne in Hamburg?

Hamburg may be better known for its harbour, fish and maritime character than for Champagne, but the city has a surprisingly varied wine scene. You’ll find wine bars and restaurants with German, French and international wines, and Champagne can easily fit into the day – from an afternoon glass to an aperitif or a bottle with dinner. Hamburg Tourism even has its own wine route highlighting wine bars and restaurants around the city.

Hamburg’s relationship with food is strongly shaped by its location on the Elbe and close to the North Sea. Fish and seafood naturally play a big role, but the city’s food scene has become much more international, with everything from traditional northern German dishes to modern Nordic-inspired cooking and international cuisine.

That makes Champagne an easy fit. Oysters, seafood, smoked fish and lighter dishes are obvious pairings, especially if you’re spending time around the harbour or the Elbe. The city has plenty of places where you can turn a simple drink into a longer lunch or dinner.

Hamburg is also a good place to explore German wine alongside Champagne. The city’s wine bars cover wines from Germany as well as France, Italy and further afield, so you’re not limited to the local drinking traditions.

And then there’s the setting. A glass of Champagne after walking along the Elbe or Elbstrand makes a very Hamburg kind of afternoon – especially when you can sit somewhere with a view of the river and the ships passing by.

Good to know

Hamburg works particularly well if you want to combine Champagne with seafood and a maritime city break. You can spend the morning around the harbour, stop for lunch, walk along the Elbe and then find somewhere for Champagne before dinner.

If you’re interested in local drinks beyond wine, Hamburg has its own traditions here too. Hamborger Köm, a local caraway spirit, is one of the city’s historic drinks. It’s obviously a very different experience from Champagne, but it’s another reminder that Hamburg has a drinks culture of its own.
