Champagne bars and restaurants in San Francisco
San Francisco has a sophisticated Champagne and wine culture shaped by its excellent food scene, historic neighbourhoods and close connection to California wine country. Union Square, Nob Hill, SoMa, North Beach and the Marina District are all worth exploring for restaurants, wine bars, hotel lounges and places suited to a Champagne celebration.
The city’s neighbourhoods each have their own personality. Nob Hill brings grand hotels and old San Francisco glamour, North Beach has Italian restaurants and a lively atmosphere, while SoMa is more contemporary, with restaurants, galleries and bars. The Marina is a good choice for a more relaxed evening, and Union Square remains a central hub for upscale dining and hotels.
San Francisco is also a great city for exploring what to eat with Champagne. Oysters, Dungeness crab, seafood and California produce are obvious choices, while the city’s Chinese, Japanese, Italian and Mexican food scenes make room for more unexpected pairings.
The city has a fascinating history, from its rapid growth during the California Gold Rush to the devastating 1906 earthquake and its transformation into one of the US’s most culturally diverse cities. Its Victorian architecture, steep streets and famous cable cars remain part of its unmistakable character.
Good to know
San Francisco is best explored by neighbourhood rather than trying to cover everything at once. Combine Nob Hill and Union Square for classic luxury, North Beach and Chinatown for food and history, and SoMa and the Mission District for a more contemporary side of the city. The waterfront, Golden Gate Park and the views around the Golden Gate Bridge are also essential.
