Montreal has one of Canada’s most exciting food and drink scenes, with a strong French influence and a distinctly multicultural personality. Old Montreal and the Old Port are the historic heart of the city, with cobblestone streets, 19th-century architecture, restaurants and elegant bars. The Plateau-Mont-Royal and Mile End offer a completely different atmosphere, with colourful houses, cafés, independent shops, bakeries, wine bars and restaurants.
For Champagne lovers, Montreal is an especially good city to explore through food. You’ll find everything from French restaurants and wine bars to more casual neighbourhood spots, and the city’s culinary diversity means there’s plenty of room to experiment with what to eat with Champagne. Oysters, seafood, caviar and local cheeses are obvious choices, but Champagne can also work beautifully with Montreal’s more adventurous cuisine.
Montreal’s history is equally interesting. Founded in the 17th century, the city grew around the St. Lawrence River and became an important centre of French culture and trade in North America. Today, that history sits alongside a famously creative contemporary food, art and nightlife scene.
Don’t spend your whole visit in Old Montreal. It’s beautiful and worth exploring, but make time for Plateau-Mont-Royal and Mile End, where you’ll get a better feel for Montreal’s everyday food and neighbourhood culture. Mile End is particularly good for cafés, bakeries, independent shops and restaurants.
