Where to drink Champagne in Uppsala?
Uppsala is Sweden’s oldest university town, built around a huge cathedral, a castle on the hill and the narrow Fyris river. Students set the rhythm of the city, and nothing shows it better than Valborg on 30 April, when the day traditionally starts with Champagne and strawberries. The rest of the year, the city’s wine bars keep Champagne close at hand.
The Champagne on our map is all in the compact centre, a short walk from the river and the cathedral. These are mostly wine bars rather than formal dining rooms: relaxed places with long lists by the glass, where you can try a Champagne next to an orange wine or a bottle from a small European producer. Some offer small tasting pours, which makes it easy to compare a few.
Uppsala is around 40 minutes by train from Stockholm, so it works well for a day trip or an evening out from the capital.
Explore the Champagne Hunters map before you go. If you find a bar or restaurant serving real Champagne that isn’t listed yet, add it to the map and help the next Champagne lover find it.
Good to know
Valborg on 30 April is the biggest day of the year in Uppsala. Students start with Champagne breakfasts by the river, watch homemade rafts race down the Fyris in the morning and, in the afternoon, head to the champagne galop at the student nations, where the bubbles are sprayed rather than sipped. The city is packed, so book accommodation well ahead. In Sweden, bottles to take away are sold only at Systembolaget, the state-owned shop, so buy your picnic Champagne there.
