Where to drink Champagne in Portugal?

Portugal has a strong wine culture, so Champagne fits surprisingly naturally into the country’s restaurant and bar scene. Lisbon and Porto are the obvious places to start, but you’ll also find Champagne in the Algarve, Madeira and other popular destinations.

Portuguese wine is the real reason to look beyond the Champagne list, though. Portugal has an enormous variety of local wines, from Vinho Verde in the north to Port and Madeira wines, as well as traditional-method sparkling wines from regions such as Bairrada. If you’re a Champagne lover, Portuguese sparkling wine is definitely worth trying alongside your usual bottle of bubbles.

Good to know

Portugal is particularly fun for wine lovers because you can combine Champagne with fresh seafood, oysters, salted fish, local cheeses and a huge range of regional wines. And if you’re travelling beyond the cities, visiting a Portuguese winery can easily become part of the trip.

Frequently asked questions

Where should I look for Champagne in Portugal?

I’d start with Lisbon and Porto, where I’m most likely to find the widest range of wine bars, restaurants and hotels. If I’m travelling along the coast, I’d also check the Algarve.

Is Portugal good for wine lovers?

Absolutely. I’d consider Portugal one of Europe’s most interesting countries for wine because of its huge variety of native grapes and regional styles.

What Portuguese sparkling wine should I try?

I’d look for Espumante from Bairrada, particularly traditional-method sparkling wines. Bairrada is one of Portugal’s best-known regions for sparkling wine and is definitely worth exploring if I normally drink Champagne.

What food should I try with Champagne in Portugal?

I’d go for oysters, fresh seafood, grilled fish, salted cod and Portuguese cheeses. The country’s coastal food culture gives me plenty of natural Champagne pairings.

What other drinks should I try in Portugal?

I’d try Vinho Verde, Port and Madeira wine, depending on where I’m travelling. If I’m in the mood for something completely different, Portuguese wine gives me plenty to explore beyond Champagne.

What to do in Portugal?

I’d explore the historic streets of Lisbon and Porto, the Douro Valley, the Atlantic coast and the Algarve, depending on my route. Portugal is one of those countries where the wine regions themselves can be a major part of the trip.

Is Portugal worth visiting?

For sure. I’d go for the combination of excellent food, a huge variety of wine, beautiful cities, coastline and a relaxed drinking culture. And if I’m a Champagne lover, there’s plenty of opportunity to mix local discoveries with the bubbles I already know I like.
