Where to drink Champagne in Norway?

Norway may not be the first country that comes to mind when you think about Champagne, but its restaurant and wine scene is much more serious than you might expect. Oslo is the obvious place to start, with wine bars, restaurants and hotels offering Champagne alongside a strong selection of wines from around the world.

Outside Oslo, cities such as Bergen, Trondheim and Stavanger are also worth checking. Norway’s food scene has a strong focus on local ingredients, seafood and seasonal produce, which makes it a particularly good setting for Champagne.

Norway also has a small but growing local wine industry, with cool-climate vineyards experimenting with varieties that can handle the conditions. It’s certainly not Champagne, but if you come across Norwegian sparkling wine, I’d give it a try.

Good to know

Norway is an excellent destination if you like combining food, wine and dramatic landscapes. Depending on where you go, you can easily turn a Champagne stop into part of a much bigger trip involving fjords, mountains, coastal towns or the northern lights.

Frequently asked questions

Where should I look for Champagne in Norway?

I’d start with Oslo, which has the widest selection of wine bars, restaurants and hotels. I’d also check Bergen, Trondheim and Stavanger if I’m travelling elsewhere in Norway.

Can I drink Champagne by the glass in Norway?

Yes, some wine bars, restaurants and hotels offer Champagne by the glass. I’d check the individual listing before visiting, as availability can change.

Is Norway good for wine lovers?

Yes. I’d especially recommend it if I enjoy serious food, seafood, natural ingredients and interesting international wines. Norway’s restaurant scene has developed considerably, particularly in Oslo.

What food should I try with Champagne in Norway?

I’d go for oysters, shellfish, salmon, fresh fish and other Nordic seafood. Champagne and Norwegian seafood are a very natural combination.

What else should I drink in Norway?

I’d try Norwegian craft beer, aquavit and, if I find one, Norwegian sparkling wine. Aquavit is particularly connected to Norwegian drinking culture and is worth trying even though it’s a very different experience from Champagne.

Does Norway produce wine?

Yes, although on a very small scale. Norwegian vineyards are experimenting with cold-climate grape varieties, and sparkling wine is one of the more interesting categories to watch.

What to do in Norway?

I’d choose based on the region – fjords, mountains, coastal villages, glaciers or the northern lights are all obvious reasons to visit. Oslo itself also has plenty of museums, architecture and waterfront areas to explore.

Is Norway worth visiting?

Absolutely. I’d go for the combination of dramatic nature, excellent seafood, interesting restaurants and a food culture that makes the most of local ingredients. Add Champagne to the mix and I’m certainly not complaining.
