Maastricht

Champagne city guide

Where should you look for Champagne in Maastricht?

Maastricht is one of those Dutch cities where wine is genuinely part of the local food culture. You’ll find wine bars, restaurants and cafés throughout the city, with plenty of opportunities to enjoy Champagne alongside a long lunch or dinner. The historic centre is compact and easy to explore on foot, while areas around Wyck and the Jeker Quarter bring their own mix of restaurants, cafés and bars.

What makes Maastricht particularly interesting for wine lovers is what lies just outside the city. South Limburg is the Netherlands’ main wine region, with vineyards spread across the hilly landscape around Maastricht. Local producers work with varieties such as Auxerrois, Riesling and Pinot Gris, and you’ll also find traditional-method sparkling wines – a particularly fun discovery for anyone who normally reaches for Champagne.

If you have time, make a trip into the surrounding wine country. Apostelhoeve, on the Louwberg above the Jekerdal, is the Netherlands’ oldest commercial winery, while other producers such as Domein Holset and Hoeve Nekum give you more opportunities to explore Dutch wine. The landscape itself is worth the trip, with vineyards, rolling hills and villages that feel very different from the Netherlands most visitors picture.

Good to know

Maastricht is also right in the Euregio, with Belgium and Germany just across the border, so it works beautifully as a base for a wider food and wine trip.

Frequently asked questions

Is Maastricht good for Champagne?

Yes. Maastricht has a strong wine and restaurant culture, but its real advantage for Champagne lovers is that it also sits in the middle of South Limburg’s wine country.

Where should I look for Champagne in Maastricht?

The city centre is the easiest place to start, with wine bars, restaurants and cafés within walking distance. Check the Champagne Hunters map for current options.

If I visit somewhere already listed, I can leave a comment about the Champagne selection and help keep the information useful for other visitors.

Does Maastricht produce wine?

Yes. Maastricht and the surrounding South Limburg area have a well-established wine industry. The Mergelland PDO has been recognised by the EU since 2018, and the region has dozens of vineyards and wineries.

What Dutch wine should I try in Maastricht?

I’d look for Limburg wines made from Auxerrois, Riesling or Pinot Gris, and I’d definitely try a local sparkling wine if I see one. The region also produces red and rosé wines.

What is Mergelland wine?

Mergelland is the protected designation for wines from South Limburg. The vineyards are influenced by the region’s hilly landscape and chalky marl and loess soils.

What local food should I try in Maastricht?

I’d try Limburgse vlaai, the region’s famous fruit-filled pie, and look for local cheeses, breads and seasonal products. Maastricht and South Limburg put a lot of emphasis on regional ingredients.
