Where to drink Champagne in Budapest?

Budapest has a proper wine culture, so Champagne doesn’t feel out of place here at all. You can find it alongside dinner, at wine-focused spots, in hotels and bars, or simply make it part of a long afternoon in the city.

And Budapest gives you a good reason to look beyond Champagne too. Hungarian sparkling wine, or pezsgő, has its own history, while the country’s still wines offer plenty to explore – especially Furmint, which is one of the grapes worth getting to know while you’re here.

Budapest is split by the Danube, and the two sides have quite different personalities. Buda is hillier and quieter, while Pest is where much of the city’s restaurant, bar and nightlife action happens. For a Champagne-focused visit, Pest is particularly useful territory to explore, with plenty of places to stop for a drink between sightseeing and dinner.

The city’s wine culture is worth paying attention to as well. Hungarian wine can sometimes be overlooked by visitors who arrive thinking mainly about Tokaji, but there’s much more to it. Look for Furmint, Hárslevelű, Kadarka and Kékfrankos, depending on what you like to drink.

If bubbles are your thing, keep an eye out for pezsgő on Hungarian wine lists. You may come across traditional-method examples that offer a completely different take on sparkling wine from Champagne. It’s a fun comparison to make while you’re actually in Hungary.

And then there is Budapest itself. A glass of Champagne after a day of thermal baths, wandering along the Danube or exploring the city’s grand architecture makes a pretty good combination.

Good to know

Budapest is a city where you can easily build a whole day around food and drinks. Start with coffee and sightseeing, take a break for a glass of Champagne, continue through the afternoon and finish with dinner and another bottle.

If you want to experience something particularly Budapest, make time for one of the city’s historic thermal baths. The contrast between a long soak and a properly chilled glass afterwards is hard to argue with.

And don’t leave Hungary without trying something local. Furmint is probably the easiest place to start if you like high-acid wines, while a Hungarian pezsgő is worth ordering when you see an interesting bottle on the list.

If you find a great Champagne place while exploring Budapest, add it to the Champagne Hunters map or share your experience in the comments on an existing listing. That way the next person looking for Champagne in the city has a better starting point too.

Frequently asked questions

Is Budapest good for Champagne?

Yes. Budapest has a strong restaurant and wine scene, with Champagne appearing in restaurants, wine bars, hotels and other drinking spots. The city is particularly easy to explore on foot, so you can combine sightseeing with stops for a glass along the way.

Where should I look for Champagne in Budapest?

There isn’t one single Champagne district. Pest is a particularly useful area to explore because of its concentration of restaurants, bars and nightlife, but good options can be found throughout the city. The Champagne Hunters map is the easiest way to see what’s nearby.

And if you visit a place that’s already listed, leave a comment with your experience – especially if you know whether they offer Champagne by the glass or what their current selection looks like.

Can I drink Champagne by the glass in Budapest?

Yes, some venues offer Champagne by the glass, while others concentrate on bottles. Availability can change, so it’s worth checking the individual listing before you go.

What Hungarian sparkling wine should I try?

Look for pezsgő, the Hungarian word for sparkling wine. If you find a traditional-method bottle from a producer you don’t know, it can be a fun way to explore Hungarian sparkling wine next to your Champagne.

What is Furmint?

Furmint is one of Hungary’s best-known indigenous grape varieties and is strongly associated with Tokaj. It can be made into both dry and sweet wines, and its naturally high acidity makes dry Furmint particularly interesting for Champagne lovers.

What should I eat with Champagne in Budapest?

You have plenty of options. Champagne’s acidity works nicely with fish, seafood, fried foods and richer dishes, while Budapest’s modern restaurant scene gives you plenty of opportunities to try less obvious pairings too.

Is Budapest a good city for wine lovers?

Definitely. Budapest gives you access to wines from all over Hungary, while wine bars and restaurants make it easy to explore them without travelling to the vineyards. If you find a Hungarian wine you love, you can then plan your next trip around the region where it comes from.

And if you discover a Champagne spot we don’t have yet, add your find to the map. You can also comment on existing places and share what you know – even a small update can be useful to someone planning their Budapest trip.
