Where to drink Champagne in Mannheim?

Mannheim may not be the first German city that comes to mind for Champagne, but its location makes it an interesting stop for wine lovers. The city sits in the Rhine-Neckar region, surrounded by four wine-growing areas: Baden, Pfalz, Hessische Bergstrasse and Rheinhessen. Together, they cover more than 25,000 hectares of vineyards.

That gives Mannheim a surprisingly good setting for exploring Champagne alongside German wines. You can find Champagne in restaurants, wine bars and other drinking spots, whether you want a glass during the day, an aperitif or a bottle with dinner.

Mannheim itself is a lively, international city, but its real advantage for wine lovers is what’s around it. The city sits between the Rhine and Neckar rivers and makes a convenient base for exploring the surrounding wine country.

Head south and you’re close to the Pfalz, one of Germany’s major wine regions and a particularly good place to explore Riesling and other German wines. The German Wine Route runs through the region, with vineyards, wine villages and producers along the way.

To the southwest lies Baden, another major wine-growing region. Baden is particularly interesting for Pinot Noir, while Riesling and other varieties are also grown across its different sub-regions.

So if you’re in Mannheim for a few days, don’t think of the city only as somewhere to drink Champagne. It can be a useful starting point for discovering several very different German wine regions within easy reach.

Good to know

Mannheim is especially worth considering if you’re planning a trip around wine rather than one particular wine region. You can have Champagne in the city, then spend another day exploring the vineyards of the Pfalz or Baden.

The nearby Deutsche Weinstrasse is an easy option for a wine-focused day trip, while Heidelberg is also only around 20 minutes away according to the local tourism board.

If you’re curious about German sparkling wine, keep an eye out for Sekt and Winzersekt on wine lists too. They’re a good way to compare what German producers are doing with sparkling wine while you’re here.
