Where to drink Champagne in Bordeaux?

Bordeaux is one of the world’s great wine cities, so it’s no surprise that Champagne has a place here too. You’ll find it in wine bars, restaurants, hotels and places where wine is taken seriously – whether you’re after a glass before dinner or a bottle to celebrate with a meal.

But Bordeaux is also a city where it makes sense to look beyond Champagne. You’re in the heart of one of France’s most famous wine regions, with hundreds of appellations and a local wine culture that is very much part of everyday life.

Bordeaux is a particularly good city for wine lovers because you don’t have to leave town to get into the local wine scene. The historic centre is full of wine bars, shops and restaurants where you can explore Bordeaux wines alongside bottles from elsewhere in France.

One thing you’ll quickly come across is the Left Bank vs Right Bank divide. On the Left Bank of the Gironde estuary, Cabernet Sauvignon tends to play the leading role in classic blends. On the Right Bank, Merlot and Cabernet Franc are more prominent. It’s an oversimplification of a much bigger wine region, but it’s a useful starting point when you’re trying to understand Bordeaux wine.

If you have time to explore beyond the city, the surrounding vineyards offer a completely different experience. Names such as Saint-Émilion, Margaux, Pauillac and Pomerol are not just famous labels – they are places you can actually visit and explore.

Good to know

Bordeaux is also home to La Cité du Vin, an interactive wine museum and cultural centre on the Garonne. It’s worth a visit even if you’re more interested in Champagne than Bordeaux reds, because it gives you a broader picture of wine, its history and how different regions approach it.

And if you’re tasting Bordeaux wine, remember that Bordeaux is mostly about blends rather than a single grape. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc are the varieties you’ll encounter most often, with Petit Verdot, Malbec and Carmenère also playing smaller roles in some wines.

For a Champagne drinker, that makes Bordeaux an interesting contrast. Champagne is all about freshness, acidity and bubbles; Bordeaux gives you a completely different expression of French wine and place.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I drink Champagne in Bordeaux?

Champagne is available at selected wine bars, restaurants, hotels and other drinking spots around Bordeaux. Check the Champagne Hunters map to find venues offering it by the glass or bottle.

Is Bordeaux a good city for wine lovers?

Absolutely. Wine is deeply connected to the city and the surrounding region, and Bordeaux has a large selection of wine bars, shops, restaurants and wine experiences.

What wine is Bordeaux known for?

Bordeaux is best known for red blends, particularly those based on Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The exact blend and style varies considerably between appellations.

What should I drink besides Champagne in Bordeaux?

This is probably the place to try Bordeaux itself. Pick a local red and, if possible, compare a Left Bank Cabernet Sauvignon-led wine with a Right Bank Merlot-led wine. It’s one of the easiest ways to understand why the region is so famous.

What is the difference between Bordeaux Left Bank and Right Bank wines?

As a general rule, Cabernet Sauvignon tends to be more important on the Left Bank, while Merlot and Cabernet Franc play a larger role on the Right Bank. It’s a useful introduction, although Bordeaux is much more varied than this simple divide suggests.
