Where to drink Champagne in Bansko?
Bansko is a mountain town at the foot of the Pirin range, best known as one of Bulgaria’s main ski resorts. Behind the hotels and lifts there’s an old town of stone houses and cobbled lanes, full of traditional taverns called mehanas. Champagne here is mostly a hotel affair: a glass by the fire after a day on the slopes, or on a garden terrace in summer.
At the moment, all the Champagne on our map in Bansko is at a five-star hotel near the gondola, with a lobby bar by the fireplace, a summer terrace facing the Pirin peaks and a restaurant. Elsewhere in town, mehanas and wine bars focus on Bulgarian wine and rakia, but it’s always worth asking, as resort menus change from season to season.
Bulgarian wine is easy to explore from here. The Melnik wine region, home of the local Shiroka Melnishka grape, is about an hour and a half’s drive south.

Good to know
Bansko has two seasons. Skiing usually runs from mid-December into April, and in summer hikers arrive for Pirin National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Some terraces and bars open only in one of the two seasons, so check before you visit. Sofia is about two and a half hours away by car, which makes it easy to combine the two.
